Dyed mulch can enhance any landscape. By applying it in strategic places using multi-task tools, you can create visual interest. Whether you opt for black or brown, here's what to know about this versatile landscaping material.

What Is Dyed Mulch?

Dyed mulch is comprised of wood chips that have been treated with colorants. The colorant is usually carbon- or iron-oxide-based, both of which are natural and non-toxic. The carbon yields black or brown mulch, while the iron yields red. Vegetable-based colorants are also available.

What Are the Benefits of Dyed Mulch?

Dyed mulch doesn't fade like natural mulch. Even though it's exposed to the elements daily, it will retain its vibrant, uniform shade. Additionally, the colorant will repel pests, including crickets, cockroaches, and termites. This will ensure your plants thrive all season long.

Dyed mulch also decomposes a lot more slowly than natural mulch, which helps the plants retain their moisture longer and helps the soil retain its nitrogen. Plants need nitrogen to synthesize nucleic acids, amino acids, enzymes, proteins, and chlorophyll. Nitrogen is depleted by runoff, erosion, leaching, and dying crops.

How Do You Apply Dyed Mulch?

Dyed mulch is perfectly safe to handle, so you don't need any special equipment to spread it. Simple, multi-task tools like wheelbarrows and bow rakes should suffice. While the best application will depend on the kinds of plants you have, it's generally advisable to spread it between 2 to 4 inches thick, which is deep enough to keep weeds from sprouting through. Remove the old mulch before laying the new product to allow water and vital nutrients to reach the soil.
