The jump shot is one of the most well-known shots in basketball and involves the player jumping straight up while holding the ball over their head. The elbow of their shooting hand bends to propel the ball forward as the other hand guides the shot. If you want to improve your jump shot, below are a few tips to practice.

How to Develop Your Jump Shot

1. Maintain Balance

Keep your feet shoulder-width apart every time you catch the ball. The stance stabilizes your body and makes jump shots and other plays easier. A lack of balance affects the release and could make you fall over. Also, keep the leg on the same side as your shooting hand slightly ahead of the other. Pointing that foot towards the basket helps you aim.

2. Place Hands & Elbows Properly

basketballWhen practicing, look at the position of your hands and elbows before every jump shot. The ball should be resting on your fingertips—instead of your palms—to avoid backspin and low shot issues. Keep the elbow of your shooting hand tucked into the body so that it remains in line with the basketball hoop. Practice this position until it becomes a habit.

3. Release With the Jump

Don’t shoot the ball until you reach the highest point of your jump. This not only increases the chances of making the basket, but it also keeps you out of range of opposing players. Attempting a shot before you reach the maximum height allows other players to block it and take the basketball from you.

4. Follow Through

After each shot, allow your hands to follow the ball. This ensures that you are aiming correctly throughout the technique and gives you the best chance of making the basket. Extend your arms as you throw and keep your fingers and wrists bent for a few seconds after completing the shot. Maintain loose wrists and gently snap the shooting wrist to lift the ball into the air and give it extra speed. Also, keep your eyes on the hoop instead of the ball, as the net is your end goal.
