Squirrels are cute animals to watch scurry through your backyard or a local park. However, you should keep them away from your home, as they can carry diseases. Even if they do not seem threatening, you should call a squirrel removal service anytime these rodents make it past the front door. These professionals have the appropriate equipment to stay safe and relocate the animal. Here are some of the illnesses you avoid by contacting a wildlife control company promptly.

What Diseases Do Squirrels Spread?

1. Rabies

Although rabies is the most severe disease on this list, it’s also the least common. If a squirrel has this illness, it may be sensitive to light and produce excess saliva. Because rabies spreads through scratches and bites, avoid direct contact with the rodents. If a squirrel seems oddly aggressive, maintain a safe distance and arrange for squirrel removal as soon as possible. Call a doctor immediately if you experience any injuries.

2. Salmonella

While you likely know that salmonella is a risk when consuming raw chicken, eggs, and other foods, rodents may also carry this disease. Even if the squirrel itself doesn’t seem ill, any human contact with the bacteria can cause vomiting, cramps, and diarrhea. Squirrel droppings, nests, and habitats are common areas where the bacteria is present.

3. Lyme Disease

Squirrels act as hosts for various parasites, including ticks. This means they can spread diseases without direct contact, as the tick may leave the squirrel when it enters your house. One of the most well-known issues these insects can carry is Lyme disease. This is most common in the Northeastern United States, with approximately 30,000 cases every year. With early attention, doctors can treat Lyme disease with antibiotics, usually resulting in quick recovery.
