Beeswax is a natural byproduct of the honey harvesting process. While it's in high demand for long-lasting candles, lip balm, and skin care, some products result in leftover wax. Fortunately, there's no need to dispose of it, as it can be repurposed in a variety of ways. Here are three popular ideas that will make your wax even more useful.
How to Use Leftover Beeswax
1. Furniture Polish
Keep your wood furniture looking new with homemade beeswax polish. The wax protects and seals virtually all types of wood from water, dirt, food spills, and other stains.
It's easy to apply and dries quickly, and its effects are durable—you may only need to apply it three or four times a year to keep your wood furniture in peak condition. Mix one part wax with three parts coconut or olive oil over light heat in a double boiler until the mixture has completely melted.
Once it cools, it will harden and then can be rubbed into furniture with a clean microfiber cloth. After gently rubbing it in, remove the residue with another clean cloth and enjoy your renewed and refreshed wood furniture.
2. Waterproofing
If you frequently wear canvas shoes, you might be able to avoid cold, wet feet in inclement weather and a gradual deterioration of the shoe material by applying a light coat of beeswax. Use a cloth to rub the wax right into the canvas and then melt it with a hairdryer. Wipe away any excess, and your shoes will have a tight seal against moisture. This process can be used to waterproof all kinds of things including some bags, tents, various articles of clothing for inclement weather, and the seams on anything you want to seal from moisture.
3. Grease for Baking Pans
Many recipes call for well-oiled baking pans to prevent foods from sticking and burning. Beeswax is an excellent substitute for butter or oil, but it offers an added benefit. Over time, the wax layer will become permanent, so you eventually won't have to grease your pans at all, which will save time, money, and hassle.
