The History of The Nutcracker Ballet
The Nutcracker is a classical fairy tale ballet about a girl and a prince who travel to the Land of Sweets on Christmas Eve. Performances of this ballet are popular throughout the holiday season, with theater companies worldwide producing their own versions of it. Below, you’ll learn more about the history of The Nutcracker and how it became a Christmas tradition.
What Is the History of The Nutcracker?
Russian Origins
The Nutcracker is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 story by the same name. Alexandre Dumas Père adapted the story for the stage, scored by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographed by Marius Petipa. The ballet premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892, one week before Christmas. Though generally modestly successful, the ballet would not become a widely beloved sensation until decades later.
Rise In American Popularity
Walt Disney’s 1940 film, Fantasia, includes numerous selections from The Nutcracker score set to colorful animated images. This exposed American audiences to Tchaikovsky’s music for the first time, and they quickly fell in love with it. During the same year, The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo toured the U.S. with a condensed version of the ballet, which was successful enough to allow the company to perform it throughout the next decade.
In 1944, The San Francisco Ballet performed the first full version of The Nutcracker in the U.S. It was choreographed by George Balanchine, who danced in the first Nutcracker production at the Mariinsky Theater. In 1957, CBS aired Balanchine's The Nutcracker on national television, exposing it to an even wider American audience and solidifying it as a holiday staple.
Modern Variations
Over the years, numerous variations of The Nutcracker have been produced to reflect different cultural contexts and time periods. The Hard Nut, set in the 1970s, and includes modern toys such as G.I. Joe™ and designed inspired by the comic book art of Charles Burns. Nutcracker: The Motion Picture is a feature-length film that builds upon the original narrative, turning it into a coming-of-age story with greater depth and complexity.
