If you've never lived in a home with a private septic system before, you may be unfamiliar with how to maintain it. Although scheduling pumping service every three years is needed to keep the system functioning, it isn't the only task you should perform. Here are some tips to help prevent clogs, broken lines, and other issues.

How to Keep Your Septic System Working Properly

1. Use Water Efficiently

All wastewater from your home flows into the septic tank. Too much water in the tank can slow the filtration process, potentially causing a sewage backup.

Conserve water by turning it off when brushing your teeth, only running the dishwasher when it's full, and taking shorter showers. Spreading out laundry throughout the week instead of doing it all at once also helps.

2. Properly Dispose of Waste

Only flush waste and toilet tissue, and avoid sending anything down the drain that can cause a clog or fill the septic tank. This includes feminine hygiene products, grease or oil, food scraps, cigarettes, cat litter, and paper towels.

Other than toilet tissue, even flushable products shouldn't be flushed, as they won't break down in the tank. Lingering substances lead to clogs and a need for more frequent pumping services, so dispose of them in the trash.

3. Maintain the Drainfield

The area surrounding the septic tank is the drainfield, and it's where wastewater flows out of the pipes and into the soil to be filtered. Avoid parking here, as it can compact the soil and prevent the water from draining or cause damage to the septic pipes. Also, avoid planting trees with deep roots in the drainfield since the roots can get into the pipes and tank and cause leaks or blockages.

4. Schedule Regular Inspections

Your septic system should be inspected by a professional every three years, but get it done annually if you have a system with mechanical parts, like an electrical float. Inspections may coincide with septic pumping service, and the technician will assess the condition of the pumps, filters, and tank. The system should also be cleaned with a high-pressure water jet every five years to remove debris from the pipes and ensure proper drainage.
