1. Use Condoms

The CDC notes that you can still get certain STDs, such as herpes or human papillomavirus (HPV) from coming into contact with your partner’s skin. Thus, abstinence is the only way to completely guarantee STD avoidance but using condoms every time you have intercourse is one of the best means of prevention if you’re sexually active.
2. Choose Partners Carefully
Limiting your sexual partners is a good way to reduce your risk of exposure to STDs. The fewer people you’re sexually active with, the lower your overall risk of STDs remains. It’s also a good idea to discuss safe sex with your partner before having intercourse.
In addition to insisting on using condoms, you may also want to talk about your sex life, including whether either of you has recently tested positive for any STDs. If a past sexual partner has tested positive for an STD or has been with someone who has, get tested at your women’s health clinic promptly.
3. Get Vaccinated
Fortunately, there’s a vaccine available to help prevent the most common STD, HPV. The HPV vaccine is safe and effective and can also help you avoid some of the more serious complications.
