Driveways, parking lots, and other asphalt surfaces are durable and practical. However, they occasionally develop cracks over time that can require repair. Not all cracks are the same though, and they develop differently. Take a look at the most common types and how they form.

What Are the Most Common Types of Asphalt Cracks?

1. Edge Cracks

Edge cracks run lengthwise along the pavement within about 24 inches from its outer edge. They can occur for many reasons, although the most common is that the ground beneath is not supporting it properly. For instance, the soil might have dried and shrunk away from the pavement.

Other possible contributors include interference by the roots of nearby shrubs and trees. You can prevent these cracks from worsening by removing nearby vegetation, ensuring good drainage, and filling in cavities beneath the asphalt edges.

2. Fatigue Cracks

Fatigue cracks are also called alligator cracks because of the way they interconnect and look like the pattern on an alligator's hide. These appear anywhere on the surface and occur because of overloading. This could mean you've put too much weight on the pavement, the ground below may be weak or flexible, or the pavement is simply not thick enough to support itself. It may need to be reinstalled. Or, if the damage is localized, remove the cracked area, ensure proper support and drainage, and patch the hole.

3. Transverse Cracks

Transverse cracking occurs perpendicular to the centerline of the surface. Normally, these are not caused by heavy loads, but rather by compression of the asphalt due to temperature changes. Winter or a nighttime drop in temperature causes the pavement to shrink, which results in cracks forming on the surface.

Minor cracking can be halted by having the pavement sealed, but severe transverse cracking may require the pavement to be replaced.
