If you’re adding a concrete patio or driveway to your home, your kids may be tempted to leave their handprints on it. While it can be an endearing tribute, it also compromises the surface by introducing moisture and creating the possibility of erosion. Instead, make your own stepping stone cast with leftover concrete. This way, you can create a lasting memento while keeping the surface intact. Here are the essential steps to completing this project.

How to Properly Put Handprints in Concrete

1. Create Your Mold

Start by cutting out a plastic mold for the stone, which can be a small container in the shape of a rectangle or circle. If you have the resources, you can create a larger stone. Next, insert a layer of chicken wire into the mold to reinforce the concrete, and slick the insides of the mold with dish soap or cooking oil so the stone easily slips out once it’s cured.

2. Prep & Print the Concrete

When the mold is ready, pour in the dry concrete mix. Then, add small amounts of water and stir until you get a thick, yet liquid consistency. Add more water and concrete as needed until the stone reaches the desired thickness. Once you have the perfect size, use a concrete float or a flat tool with a handle to smooth the surface. After smoothing the surface, let it sit for 12-24 hours. You'll want the surface to be stiff, yet soft enough to be impressed upon.

Now, coat your child’s hands in cooking oil and have them press lightly into the concrete. Have them press until the concrete reaches the base of their wrists, then pull back quickly. Because the concrete has begun curing, it will hold the shape.

3. Cure & Complete

The concrete needs to release the rest of its moisture to harden, so cover your mold with plastic wrap. It takes between 3-7 days for concrete to cure fully, so be patient and keep the mold covered. After this period, you can easily slide the block from the mold and place it in your garden or by the front door.
