As many states loosen their COVID-19 restrictions, travelers are once again booking hotels at their favorite destinations. While Hawaii has reopened its doors to those within the U.S., there are certain requirements to follow before you travel. If you're planning a trip to Maui, learn what to expect in the guide below.

Before You Travel

Under normal circumstances, you might be booking your hotel and accommodations or planning a relaxing day on the beach. But amid the pandemic, it's essential to know which requirements and restrictions are in place before traveling to Maui.

Anyone traveling to Hawaii by airplane is required to pass a negative COVID-19 test 72-hours before their departure. The test must be completed by a certified Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) lab from Trusted Testing and Travel Partners. Anyone who fails to submit a negative test will be subject to a mandatory 10-day quarantine upon their arrival.

To ensure you're travel-ready, visit the state's website to create a user account. Here, you can upload pertinent information, such as the trip details, a recent photo of yourself, and your negative test results. 24 hours before your flight, fill out the required questionnaire to check that you're in good health before traveling. Once verified, you'll be given a unique QR code that airport officials will scan before your departure.

To expedite the check-in process, have the QR code available on your mobile device or a paper printout. You'll also need your government ID, contact information, negative test results, or any certified quarantine exemption paperwork.

After You've Arrived

Upon arrival, have your QR code and identification paperwork handy, as you'll encounter another screening process before leaving the airport. Upon verification, an airport screening agent will update your QR code, noting that you've been screened and are exempt from quarantine. If you're renting a vehicle, the company will likely require this QR code to confirm the rental.

Hawaii is still adhering to strict social distancing protocols. Maintain physical distancing of six feet or more, and avoid gathering in large groups. Face coverings are required throughout the islands unless you're eating or drinking. Most parks, beaches, and trails are open for use, with some restrictions. Check the county's website for regulations before venturing out.
