When vacationing on Maui, you'll likely have a long list of activities you want to try, from visiting the beach to playing a round of golf. But you need to figure out how to get to each destination from your hotel room. Here are the top ways for visitors to get around the island.

4 Ways to Get Around Maui

1. Rent a Car

For the greatest freedom, rent a car. Numerous rental agencies operate out of Kahului Airport, including Avis®, Hertz®, Dollar®, Enterprise®, Alamo®, Thrifty®, Advantage®, and National®. Their prices are reasonable, especially for compact cars, and drivers of any legal age can sign the rental agreement. However, with the recent influx of tourists, securing a rental car is more difficult, so it's best to reserve one ahead of time. Those under age 25 must also pay an additional young driver fee because of their relative inexperience behind the wheel. Since Hawaii is a no-fault insurance state, you should buy collision insurance if your current policy doesn't include that.

2. Hire a Taxi

Taxi cabs are readily available at the airport, and your hotel can call one if you're planning an excursion. The local drivers can also offer recommendations on the sights and eateries. However, don't plan on being able to flag a cab down in traffic as you might be used to in large cities. Pricing per mile is also a little higher than on the mainland, so longer trips can add up. Although ride-shares operate on the island as well, they offer less coverage at night.

3. Ride a Shuttle

Many hotels on the island offer complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport. Depending on the hotel, you may also be able to catch a shuttle to and from other popular attractions. These are often free for guests and complete the circuit on a preset schedule. Ask your desk clerk about destinations and times.

4. Take the Bus

The Maui County Department of Transportation offers transit bus service throughout the island, maintaining 40 different routes to popular attractions. The cost is $2 per boarding or $4 for an unlimited daily pass. You can check routes and departure times online.
