Books hold intellectual and sentimental value, and an extensive library is the product of years of time and monetary investment. However, you might not know how to pack them when it's time to place them in a storage unit to free up space in the home. The following guide provides the proper storage techniques to preserve these delicate and valuable items.

How to Store Books in a Storage Unit

1. Air Out Your Books

Start by dusting the books lightly with a cloth, and air them out in a well-ventilated space. If one of them feels damp or smells musty, you can prevent mildew by allowing it to sit in a sunny area. This method can eliminate bacteria and dry the book gently. Before packing the items into a storage unit, flip through the pages to check for mold.

2. Inspect for Pests

While airing out your books, check for insect eggs. These look like small black seeds and are most commonly found between the pages and the binding. If you find any, wipe them away gently with a cloth. However, avoid using bug spray, as the chemicals in the solution will damage the book.

3. Pack by Size & Weight

Packing heavier books at the bottom will prevent smaller, lighter books from getting crushed over time. Hardcover items should also go towards the bottom because they can withstand more weight. Keep books of similar size together to maximize space in each box.

4. Choose the Right Boxes

Store your books sideways or with the spine on the bottom in the proper boxes. A rigid cardboard option is ideal for short-term self-storage, as plastic containers trap moisture which can cause mildew and warping. Use acid-free archival boxes as a self-storage solution if you have valuable books, such as antiques or first editions.

5. Keep Storage Boxes Off the Floor

If your storage unit is on the ground floor, it can be prone to flooding. Protect your collection by placing books onto shelving, other boxes, or furniture. You can also look for pallets, usually available for an extra cost at a storage facility.
