Almost any industrial process requires advanced filtration systems to purify raw materials, final products, and coolant. Depending on the application, mechanical engineering professionals may use a variety of filtration systems, each designed to remove different types of impurities. Below are a few common filtration technologies an engineer may recommend for your system.

Common Types of Industrial Filtration Systems

1. Gravity Filtration

Gravity filtration systems are the simplest, often used in chemical labs to remove large impurities. In these systems, a liquid is poured through a funnel onto a paper filter. As the fluid collects in a beaker, the filter collects solid matter too large to pass through the membrane.

2. Cyclone Filtration

To remove dust and airborne particles, these systems create a cyclone inside an enclosure. Solid particles are forced to the outside of the air currents, where they’re collected by filters or air scrubbers. This efficient, effective filtration technology is used in the energy sector and a wide range of other industries.

3. Centrifugal Filters

Similar to cyclone filters, centrifugal filtration uses rotation to separate solid matter from liquids. As liquids or semi-liquids are spun in a centrifuge, solid matter is forced to the outside, where it’s captured in filters or screens. The liquid is forced out by inertia and collected for transport to the next step in the process.

4. Hot Filtration

Dissolved solids may crystallize under certain conditions, potentially clogging pipes, valves, and filters. To minimize the risk, hot filtration systems heat fluids to a high temperature, which makes crystallization impossible. Mechanical engineers then allow the substance to cool, which allows particles to gather into crystals, which can be easily removed.
