Attractive fencing enhances your home’s appearance while keeping your dog safe in the yard. Unfortunately, your furry friend may not see it that way and try to dig their way out. Besides damaging your landscaping, this behavior can leave you needing fence repairs and put your pet at risk if they escape. Since you can’t keep an eye on them all the time, use the following tips to protect your fencing.

How to Dog-Proof Your Fence

1. Bury Chicken Wire

Chicken wire is a steel mesh usually used to house poultry. It can be repurposed as an effective, painless digging deterrent when buried along the fence line. Bury a layer of chicken wire 12 inches below the soil, attaching the top to the fence with zip ties. Curl the sharp ends away from your yard, and place heavy stones along the bottom of the wire to weigh it down before replacing the soil.

You can then work with your dog to modify their behavior and discourage them from digging. If they do dig, they’ll only penetrate a few inches into the ground before the wire stops their progress.

2. Redecorate the Fence Line

The fence line can be a great place for additional hardscaping and landscaping features. If your dog has dug extensively around the edge of the yard, make it an opportunity to add attractive water features after any needed fence repairs are complete. The stones and PVC liners used to create ponds and streams will act as additional digging deterrents.

Alternatively, you can use smooth pebbles or rocks to create paths or rock gardens along the perimeter. These will be impossible to dig through and may even be a fun place for your dog to play without damaging your property.

3. Add a Sandbox

Ultimately, a dog’s digging is a behavioral issue, and it can be more productive to provide them with an alternative to your lawn. If they have a favorite digging spot, first repair any existing damage, then add a child’s sandbox to the area. With an alternative to the fence line, your dog can burn off energy without causing you additional stress. Keep the sand damp to make digging more of a fun challenge, and bury some toys in it to hold their interest.
