If you own a classic truck, keeping the exterior in good condition allows you to show off the vehicle proudly when you take it to an auto show or have friends visit. The paint is one of the most vulnerable aspects of the appearance, and protecting it properly will ensure the truck stays beautiful. Below are several strategies that will keep the paint looking new.

A Guide to Paint Protection for Vintage Trucks

1. Clean It Regularly

While driving a classic truck is one of the most fun parts of owning it, you may encounter substances that can damage the paint. For example, tree sap can harden over time and scratch the exterior when you remove it, while dead bugs and bird droppings are acidic and eat through the paint and corrode the metal.

Once a week, hand-wash the truck with microfiber cloths and a mild soap formulated for auto finishes. Never use abrasive cleaning materials, as these can create small scratches in the paint. Also, to prevent rust, avoid showering the vehicle in water. After washing, dry the vehicle with a chamois towel. For further protection, wax the truck every two months.

2. Drive Carefully

Unless you rely on your vintage truck for daily use, choose the days you take it out carefully to minimize paint damage. For example, try to avoid driving during wet or winter weather, as the rain and salt can corrode the metal. Also, avoid gravel roads because the rocks can chip the paint.

When driving, stay at or below the speed limit and stay away from heavy traffic to reduce the risk of an accident. If you go to the store, park in an open area and away from other vehicles to avoid dings from doors and stray shopping carts.

3. Store It Wisely

If you won’t be driving your truck for a few months, consider keeping it in a storage facility. While a residential garage also offers protection, finding a climate-controlled storage unit allows you to control the humidity in the air. This helps keep the interior clean and reduces the chance that mold or mildew develop. Always clean a classic truck before storing it, and cover it inside the unit to prevent dust.
