One of the best parts of owning a vintage truck is being able to show off your vehicle at auto shows. If you want to exhibit yours, preparing it for the big day ensures you make a positive impression on attendees. Even if you aren't participating in a competition, here are several strategies to make the vehicle shine.

How Can You Get a Vintage Truck Ready for Display?

1. Scrub Under the Hood

If you want to show off the vehicle's engine, you'll need to leave the hood open. To provide the best look, you should ensure the components are spotless. Clean this area before the exterior to avoid spreading grease onto the body after you wash it. Performing this step also helps you detect leaks and mechanical issues that might be hidden behind debris. If you are entering a competition, judges will inspect the hood and undercarriage carefully, so clean both areas.

2. Wash It

After cleaning the mechanical parts, focus on the truck's exterior. Avoid taking the vehicle to an automated car wash, as these businesses don't cater to vintage trucks. Always wash the vehicle by hand, and use products designed for automotive paint so that you don't dull the finish.

When cleaning, use a separate bucket for rinsing the sponge before applying soap. Begin with the wheels before moving to the auto body, starting from the roof and working down. Wash your truck in a shaded location to prevent streaks from forming due to quick drying. Also, make sure you clean the bed. Remove any tools or debris that are inside, then scrub the surface with a brush and soap. Afterward, dry the vehicle with a microfiber towel.

3. Polish It

Once the truck is dry, polish and wax the body. Squeeze a small amount of polish to a tack cloth and apply it in a circular motion to the paint. Let the substance sit and turn dull before wiping the residue with a clean cloth. Next, apply the wax in thin, even layers so that it shines. Turtle wax works best on vintage auto body paint as it is not as strong as other varieties.

4. Clean the Interior

The interior of your vintage truck goes a long way in impressing attendees and judges, so take time to clean it thoroughly. Remove the mats and upholstery, then brush the inside of the vehicle. Vacuum the items you remove, as well as the floors, seats, and spaces in between. Use a mild soap for wiping solid surfaces, such as the windows, and then switch to a specialized cleaner for leather materials.
