Computers, tablets, and smartphones are almost everywhere you look. They play a large role in classrooms, businesses, and are leisure products, and you’ll eventually have to introduce them to your children. It’s important to be strategic when doing this. You’ll avoid common pitfalls and ensure your children’s lives are truly enhanced by either newer or used Apple® products and other electronics. Below, learn how to introduce your children to technology to instill healthy practices.

Why It’s Important to Understand These Devices

Many teachers use computers and digital devices in the classroom. They’re also used at home for research and completing assignments, which is why your child needs to be computer literate. Not knowing how to perform web searches or navigate computer functions could set them back. Understanding devices early could give them an advantage and may also spark an early interest in computer engineering, software development, and coding.

How to Introduce Them to Children

used Apple® productsChildren should know how to perform basic computer functions, such as turning the device on and off and opening software or apps, by kindergarten. They should know how to perform browser searches by second grade and handle video calls, basic emails, and advanced software functions by fourth grade.

Start slow when you’re explaining the navigation process. Explain the mechanics of the computer, tablet, or smartphone to your child. Show them how to turn it on and what the digital or external keyboards do. Explain mouses and touchscreen, and then show them how to click and deploy software and apps.

You can start doing this by age 3 when children will have the motor skills to perform these actions and will understand what you’re saying. Downloading age-appropriate apps on your used Apple products will allow them to further interact with the device.

Why You Should Limit Screen Time

Too much screen time can be a negative thing. Children may develop poor exercise habits because they choose to use their devices instead of playing outside. They may also develop attention problems and behavioral issues due to constant technological stimulation. Also, you should always monitor your child when using a device, because if they don’t browse safely, they may stumble upon inappropriate content.

Blue light exposure from device screens can also impact sleep quality, so limit screen time and have them wear protective eyewear. Generally, two hours per day of screen time spaced out throughout the day should be an adequate amount. Dedicate it as either a reward or opportunity to practice computer and device skills.
