After remaining dormant for the winter, your air conditioning unit may need some help to ensure it is efficient enough when the warm weather arrives. With spring approaching, you should set aside time to prepare the system so that you can handle any necessary repairs and prevent costly breakdowns. Here are several tips to help you with this process.

What Are the Best Spring Air Conditioner Maintenance Tasks?

1. Clear the Outdoor Unit

During winter, natural debris like leaves and branches can collect around the outdoor air conditioning unit. This debris can clog the intake vents of the appliance, preventing it from receiving enough air. This limits the condenser coils efficiency, which causes the indoor air to be warmer. To prevent this, inspect the unit and remove any blockages that you find. Then, trim any bushes or plants that have grown too close so that you have at least a 2-foot barrier around the unit.

2. Change the Filter

The filter in your air conditioning unit serves as an extra layer of protection for your family. This component collects dirt, debris, pollen, and pet dander before these pollutants can circulate throughout the home, increasing the overall indoor air quality. However, it is not as effective when it clogs, and it can even restrict the air flow and make the system less efficient. Before turning it on for the season, replace the filter. Then, monitor and replace it at least once every three months.

3. Check the Ducts

For the air ducts to be efficient, they must be sealed properly. However, when cracks or holes develop in this system, they can leak air that prevents the home from cooling properly. You can check for this damage by visually inspecting the ductwork with a flashlight. Alternatively, turn the air conditioner on and hold your hand close to the ducts and joints so that you can feel any escaping air. If you find a small hole, you can seal it with aluminum foil tape. However, large gaps require professional HVAC repairs, as you may need to replace sections of the ductwork.
