If you’re planning to visit Hawaii during the winter, don’t miss your chance for whale watching. But before you book your experience, it can be helpful to learn more about what to expect. Below are some interesting facts about whale watching on the Big Island.
What to Know About Whale Watching on the Big Island
1. See a Variety of Whales
There are roughly twenty species of whales in Hawaiian waters; some rarely seen. Humpback whales are the most common, but sperm whales, short-finned pilot whales, and beaked whales are sometimes spotted. If you’re extremely lucky, you may see pygmy killer whales or melon-headed whales, though they prefer much deeper waters.
2. Peak Viewing Season
Winter is the peak season to see humpback whales off the Big Island, particularly from December through as late as the end of March. This is when the whales migrate from Alaska to the warmer waters of Hawaii to breed and calve. Your best chance to see them is early in the morning, around 8:00 a.m., with sightings reported almost every 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Where You’re More Likely To See Them
Whales prefer to frequent protected waters where there are fewer disturbances and less noise to keep them away. Some of the most popular whale spots are off the Kohala Coast or North Kona.
While the closest viewing method is on an approved charter boat, you may also be able to see them from the shore thanks to their size, even when they’re miles away. Keep an eye out for them from known viewing spots, and if you notice consistent activity in one area, see if your whale guide can go to that area on your adventure.
