A garbage disposal is a device that is installed beneath kitchen sinks. It consists of a metal or plastic canister with a large open compartment that catches food waste as it goes down the drain. The disposal uses a motor that provides power to an oscillating shredder ring, which breaks down food leftovers so they may flow smoothly through plumbing. However, improper use can cause the device to break or malfunction, resulting in the need for appliance repairs. Here's how to ensure your disposal remains fully functional.

4 Ways to Keep Your Garbage Disposal Operational

1. Run Cold Water Only

Using hot water may cause oil on dishes and cookware to heat up and become thinner as it goes down the drain. Once it cools, it may congeal and get stuck in the disposal, drain, or pipes. You can prevent clogs and backups by using cold water only, as this keeps greases in their solid state, allowing the disposal to sufficiently break them down.

2. Keep Damaging Items Out

Vegetables such as celery, potato skins, and asparagus have strong fibers that can get tangled in the shredder ring, preventing it from spinning and causing the motor to burn out. Additionally, meat bones are too hard for the disposal to break down and may dull the blades.

Foods that expand when submerged in water, such as pasta and rice, can clog the disposal. Keep these items out to prevent the need for appliance repairs.

3. Avoid Using Drain Cleaners

On occasion, you might notice slow draining water in the kitchen sink and use a liquid drain cleaner to remove the blockage. However, drain cleaning solutions often contain harsh chemicals that can corrode your disposal, preventing the shredder ring from spinning properly and dulling the blades.

Additionally, these chemicals may deteriorate the lining of plumbing pipes, creating small holes that allow water to leak. If you notice a slow drain, try to plunge the blockage, or hire a plumber to remove it to protect the disposal and pipes.

4. Clean Regularly

If food residue accumulates on the disposal's shredder ring, it may no longer pulverize food and have difficulty oscillating. Additionally, lingering food waste can accumulate on inner walls and lead to clogs. Running cold water and dish soap down the disposal after each use may clear food residue. You can also run a handful of ice cubes through the disposal to help remove stubborn debris from the blades and inner walls.
