We hear the same thing from a lot of customers; they’re tired of how their room looks.  But, the furniture is in great shape.  It’s hard to justify the expense of a makeover when the bones of still look great!

Here are a few tips from our designers about giving your existing room a face lift, without going all out on new design.

1.  Update your Accessories

By accessories, we mean lamps, pillows, window treatments, wall hangings, and decor.  It’s amazing what a huge difference you can make!

Now, this does not mean going to Home Goods and filling your cart. Be thoughtful and deliberate in your choices.  Take the time to think about what your trying to achieve.

In this picture, the “after” is Americana.  Using the same furnishings, you could easily go beach-y by adding soft blues and driftwood accents, French country with the right pillows and large scaled lamp, or soft and feminine with muted colors and floral prints.  Let your personality shine when choosing your accessories.  There are no right and wrong answers, only what you love!

2. Swap out your Rug

In our world, a rug on a hard floor is a must.  A rug on carpet is strongly-suggested.  When in doubt, use a rug.  Honestly, there is no better way to pull a room together than by using a rug!

Make sure the rug is big enough to get the front legs of each piece of furniture on it.  If not, your space will look choppy and small.  When it comes to rugs, bigger is better.

Rugs have a huge price range.  The size and material of the rug are the two biggest factors.  If you go for cheap material, be prepared to replace it in a few years or sooner.  A well made wool rug will be more expensive, but will last much longer.

3. Replace your Occasional Tables

Your cocktail table is, more than likely, the second largest piece of furniture in your room (behind a sofa or sectional).  Often times, tables are the last to be replaced.  Leaving your living room looking dated.

Don’t feel limited to go with a “table” either.  You can re-purpose trunks, suitcases, warehouse carts, and so many other things into tables!  Ottomans and poufs are a fantastic way to add a layer of depth and texture, too.  There are so many options available!
