If you're a college student looking to upgrade your current laptop, investing in a pre-owned MacBook® is a smart idea. Because there are a few different options to choose from, it can be challenging to find the right one for you. Use the following guide to help you determine what kind of laptop you need.

What to Look for When Shopping for a MacBook

1. Size

A larger screen is beneficial for graphic design and animation students, but it's also a must for those who enjoy streaming movies and television shows. If you prefer a bigger laptop, the MacBook Pro comes with a 16-inch option.

With a larger screen comes a weightier laptop, and some people don't enjoy lugging around the 4.3-pound MacBook Pro. If portability is more significant than screen size, choose a MacBook Air. This laptop weighs 2.8 pounds and boasts a 13.3-inch screen, making it a good option for students constantly on the go.

2. Storage

All MacBooks offer sizable storage, but the 16-inch Pro is the clear winner with a range of 512 gigabytes (GB) to 8 terabytes (TB), based on which version you buy. The 13-inch version is also quite accommodating, as it ranges from 256GB to 4TB.

While it's the lowest of the bunch, the MacBook Air is quite impressive, with a range of 256GB to 2TB. However, students who frequently run multiple applications, requiring a lot of energy, are probably better served by a MacBook Pro.

3. Processing Speed

No matter which MacBook you choose, you can decide how much random access memory (RAM) is available, which dictates the processing speed. More GB means more computing power, but keep in mind that this will also increase the cost of the laptop.

To make the right decision, consider how you will use the device at school. If you primarily use it for word processing and web browsing, you can probably get away with a minimum of 8GB. If you run video-editing software or similar programs, you should have no less than 16GB.
