From ordering furniture to booking a flight, many people rely on Mac® laptops and desktops to carry out their online tasks. However, much like any device that connects to the internet, this convenience presents certain security risks. If you want to safeguard your devices from viruses, hackers, and other threats, below are a few security strategies to follow.

How Can You Secure a Mac?

1. Manage Passwords

Generally, you should use passwords that are a mix of numbers, capital letters, and special characters to make accessing your accounts harder. However, it can be challenging to remember these unique variations, so invest in a password manager program to keep track of them for you. Look for those that provide encryption features and secure logins on websites.

Many options will generate a unique password that is challenging to crack, ensuring your online safety. Using a password manager program is helpful if you have many different accounts and don’t want to keep creating new credentials.

2. Avoid Automatic Logins

laptopsIf you use a Mac laptop, you may love the convenience of automatically logging in when you turn it on. However, since you can take this device nearly everywhere, anyone can steal it and log in as the owner, gaining access to your personal files.

To prevent this risky scenario, you will have to adjust your device settings. Click on Systems Preferences, then Users & Group, and then Login Options. Turn the automatic preference to “off.” Alternatively, if you use a Mac desktop, your login will automatically configure during the initial setup phase. By deactivating the automatic process, you reduce the chance of thieves accessing personal accounts.

3. Restrict Location Tracking

Many companies ask if they can track your physical location through your laptop or desktop. However, when you enable this setting, you can allow would-be thieves to know the location of your device. If you are uncomfortable with this tracking, you can disable the feature, which is found under the Security & Privacy section in the System Preferences. Click on the privacy tab, choose location services, and then turn it off. This additional step minimizes which apps can tag your location.
