When you're looking for a custom golf cart, you have two primary choices of motor: electric or gas-powered. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, so golf enthusiasts will sometimes have friendly debates about which is superior. Ultimately, though, the decision depends on your individual wants and needs. Here's a side-by-side comparison to help you select the type that's right for you.

The Pros & Cons of Electric Vs. Gas-powered Golf Carts

Electric

Electric carts produce no exhaust emissions, so they're easily the greenest option. They also can't leak gasoline or leave unpleasant odors, smoke, or fumes on the golf course. These models are much quieter, too, because there's no internal combustion engine.

Cost-wise, electric carts have numerous advantages as well. They're less expensive to purchase and maintain, and you can charge yours by plugging it into a wall outlet instead of buying gas. Most people find this a significant convenience, although if you let the battery discharge, it may take an hour or more to get the cart running again.

Gasoline

Gasoline carts can travel much farther on a tank of gas—up to 200 miles—than electric carts can go on a single charge, which is typically only two rounds of golf. Most have a higher top speed as well, which could cut down travel time and permit you to travel legally on certain public streets.

They can also carry heavier loads because of the more powerful engine. If you run out of gas, you only need to pour in a gallon of fuel to be immediately operational again.
