When you need a new trailer for your home or business, one of the most significant decisions is whether you should get a single- or tandem-axle model. While they share similar benefits, they serve different hauling purposes. Below is more information about each type so that you can determine which suits your needs best.

Single-Axle

This option has a single set of wheels that join together with one axle. As a result, they are smaller and easier to maneuver. This makes them a better choice if you must move the trailer through tight spaces, such as hauling it through wooded areas.

Because of their size and lighter weight, single-axle models tend to be more fuel efficient to tow. This also makes them less expensive overall. From the purchase price to future maintenance, you can expect to pay less.

However, their size has certain disadvantages. For instance, you cannot store significantly large items or a considerable amount of smaller items. Additionally, heavy loads will cause the tires to wear out much faster, requiring premature replacements. They are also prone to swaying when traveling at high speeds, which is dangerous if you are hauling loose material, such as dirt or gravel.

Tandem-Axle

trailerA tandem-axle trailer has two or more sets of wheels that sit behind each other and connect with multiple axles. The extra tires keep the trailer stable while moving at higher speeds, making them ideal for those who need to tow items over long distances.

The extra wheels also make it possible to move bigger loads. However, you must distribute the weight evenly to avoid placing too much pressure on one set of axles. For example, if you must haul appliances for a kitchen renovation, lay them flat on the bed, rather than standing them up.

The downside of these options is that they reduce your gas mileage significantly, especially when carrying heavy objects. However, you can minimize this by choosing models that use light-weight, durable materials, such as aluminum. While it will cost more to replace the tires, you typically do not have to do it as often because the weight spreads throughout the bed.
