No matter the season, your basement is always at risk of excess moisture and flooding. This is especially true if it doesn't have proper waterproofing. Basement flooding has a number of deleterious effects, so here are a few signs to watch out for to catch flooding early.

3 Signs There's Been Water in Your Basement

1. Mold and Mildew

Mold and mildew are fungi that grow from microscopic spores that permeate the air around us. No matter where you are, there's likely to be fungal spores in the air just waiting for the right conditions to start growing. Basements tend to provide all the necessary conditions to encourage mold and mildew, and water is the final key. If you notice mold or mildew growing, and if you smell their telltale odors, it's a sure sign that your basement has been infiltrated by water and needs waterproofing.

2. Efflorescence

When water penetrates the concrete foundation of your home and enters your basement, it also brings in certain minerals. Then, when the flood waters recede, these minerals can precipitate out of the water and stick on the walls and floors. The result of this is efflorescence, the technical term for the chalk-like white stains you find on walls and floors after water has evaporated. Even if you never see the water itself, efflorescence is proof that excess moisture is collecting in your basement and then evaporating.

3. Cracks

Most foundations and basement walls nowadays are made from concrete, which is a porous material that can absorb and transport moisture. This can lead to cracks in the foundation, which will let in further water. Any crack you find in your basement walls compromises your waterproofing and threatens to let in water.
