Although bathroom remodeling is a large undertaking, it doesn’t have to be stressful. Thorough planning will ensure you end up with a comfortable and relaxing space when everything is done. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to prepare for a successful remodel.

Do:

Incorporate plenty of lighting.

The bathroom is a task-oriented space, so you need enough light to see what you’re doing. A mix of natural and artificial lighting will also make the room feel bigger.

Having at least one window near your mirror will provide the natural light needed for an accurate reflection when getting ready for the day. Task lighting in the shower will make it easy to clean, and LED recessed dimmers in the ceiling will let you adjust the illumination to a more comfortable setting based on the time of the day.

Choose appropriate surface materials.

The materials selected for the flooring, walls, fixtures, countertops, and cabinetry should do more than contribute to the aesthetic. They also need to handle moisture and humidity, which can lead to mold growth and cause certain materials to swell and buckle.

Ideally, stick to nonporous options, like porcelain tile, quartz, glass, and luxury vinyl, which don’t absorb moisture and resist staining, bacteria, and odors. When selecting tiles, choose larger pieces to minimize grout lines and make upkeep easier.

Don’t:

Overlook storage needs.

bathroom remodelingIt’s easy to get swept up in installing a large walk-in shower or a double-sink vanity and forget about where you’re going to store your linens, hygienic products, and other essentials. Not planning for enough storage space can leave your newly designed bathroom looking cluttered.

Avoid having to randomly toss your belongings on the countertops or the floor by carefully thinking about everything kept in the room. Depending on the available space, implement a combination of vanity and medicine cabinets, recessed wall shelving, towel racks, and a linen pantry to house every item.

Move fixtures unnecessarily.

Relocating the toilet, shower, or sink will typically require moving the connected pipes and drainage. If the bathroom is on a slab or a second floor, this can be an incredibly pricey endeavor. Unless you’re replacing the pipes during the remodel, there are often better solutions to rejuvenate the room or make it feel bigger.
