Regular brake service ensures that cars can stop safely when needed. It identifies issues early and prevents emergencies before they begin. However, even with frequent maintenance, brakes can wear down unexpectedly, so smart drivers should keep an eye and ear out for warning signs of brake failure. If you're worried about your car’s stopping power, watch for these issues.

What Are the Warning Signs of Failure?

An illuminated anti-lock brake system (ABS) light on the dash is often the first indication that there’s something wrong with the system. Listen carefully for squeaking, squealing, and grinding while driving. These noises indicate that the pads are too worn down to be effective.

Excess shaking or rumbling during stops indicates a problem with the metal rotors. Unexplained increases in stopping time are also a sign of malfunctioning brakes, so if your vehicle is exhibiting any of these issues, it should be taken in for brake service without delay.

What to Do If They Fail

brake serviceFirst and foremost, remain calm, then use your horn and emergency signals to alert other drivers of the issue so that you prevent an accident. Downshift to a lower gear to reduce acceleration and steer toward the shoulder of the road while remaining alert for other vehicles.

For cars with an ABS, hold down the brake pedal firmly and see if the brake pads will still apply pressure to the rotors. This is a typical failsafe for any car with an ABS. For those without ABS, pump the brakes to help them build pressure in the brake fluid and regain some function.

Once the car has slowed, apply the emergency brake to bring it to a complete stop. If the wheels begin skidding, release the emergency brake and allow the car to slow down before trying again. Once the vehicle is clear of other traffic, signal for help and wait for professional assistance before trying to move it again.
