Many families enjoy the freedom and adventure of off-roading. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility task vehicles (UTVs) each offer the perfect way to fuel your need for speed while promoting safety, but this can make it difficult to choose between the two. To help you decide which would better suit your needs, learn more about both models below.

ATV

ATVs can safely operate with two people if a rider saddles the seat directly behind the driver. Often called quads due to their four wheels, these vehicles feature handlebars for steering that allow for tight turns and avoiding obstacles.

People typically use these rigs for recreation, whether they're riding trails, hunting, or transporting gear to campsites. They're also great for towing small trailers for boats, personal watercraft, and snowmobiles.

ATVATVs are lighter and more compact than UTVs, making them more maneuverable. Some models also have electronic power-steering and 4x4 powertrains that delegate power to all wheels at once, so it's easy to steer through wet, muddy conditions.

UTV

UTVs are often referred to as side-by-sides or SXS because they feature one or two bench seats that can fit up to four people. These off-roaders have roll-bars that act as a roof to provide shade and limit precipitation while protecting riders if the vehicle tips. Many models also have windshields to keep mud and bugs from spraying upward.

UTVs are larger than ATVs and often have four to six wheels, a more traditional steering wheel, and a short cargo bed behind the seat. This back area is perfect for coolers and fishing, hunting, farming, or camping gear.

These models also have seat belts, making them ideal for families with young riders. However, because of the roll bar, UTVs require higher clearance and work best on established trails.
