With the summer heat right around the corner, the last thing you want to deal with at home is a troublesome air conditioner. Unfortunately, many AC units experience short-cycling, which occurs when the system turns on and off rapidly without effectively cooling the premises. Short-cycling is both a problem and a symptom of other issues, but either situation would require the assistance of an HVAC contractor. Here are some of the most common reasons AC units experience this issue.

Why Is Your AC Unit Short-Cycling?

1. Frozen Evaporator Coils

Frozen evaporator coils are one of the most common causes of short-cycling. The coils are responsible for removing hot air from your home and replacing it with cool air. However, the component could freeze for various reasons, such as dirt accumulation, low refrigerant, and poor airflow from a dirty air filter. That causes the unit to cool your property ineffectively. You can defrost coils by shutting off the AC unit and allowing the component to thaw. However, you will need HVAC repair if the coils freeze again.

2.  Dirty Air Filter

Ideally, air filters in AC units should be replaced once every month to prevent the screen from clogging. If the filter becomes too clogged with dust, dirt, and other airborne pollutants, airflow will become restricted, forcing the HVAC system to work harder.

The blower and compressor can become stressed due to excessive work, which leads to overheating and short-cycling. Changing the air filter could prevent this issue, but you might need AC repair to fix damaged components due to dirty filters.

3. Low Refrigerate Levels

Air conditioners rely on refrigerant to cool a building. If the levels drop too low, the AC will overheat and overwork to achieve the desired temperature. As a result, the system will cycle on and off irregularly. Over time, low refrigerant levels can lead to a total system malfunction that will require an air conditioning unit replacement. However, an HVAC contractor could inspect the cooling system and replenish the refrigerant to avoid that issue.
