When you’re considering getting a new HVAC system for your home, choose an energy-efficient model. A unit’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating is a measure of its efficiency. Here’s more information about how picking a model with the right rating will help you save energy.

What Is a SEER Rating?

A product’s SEER rating refers to how efficient it is. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) uses a standard formula to produce this measurement, which calculates the amount of treated air the unit produces relative to how much power it uses over one year.

Most HVAC systems have SEER ratings of 13 to 25. Currently, the DOE requires all units to have a minimum rating of 13. In general, the higher the number, the less energy the unit uses to match the setting on your thermostat.

How Will the Upgrade Affect Your Energy Bills?

HVACWhile higher SEER ratings generally result in savings, how much you save depends on many factors. For example, how well your home is insulated and how often you use the device will determine your heating and cooling expenses. On especially hot and humid days, your AC may also consume more power to keep your home comfortable.

While a SEER rating compares output to energy consumption, an HVAC system’s British thermal units (BTUs) measure its energy output. The higher the BTU, the more cold air the unit can produce. The appropriate BTU depends on household size, with more BTUs necessary for larger spaces.

By calculating the total number of BTUs produced (your unit’s BTU output x the number of hours it runs per day x the number of active days) and dividing it by the SEER rating, you get an estimate of the actual power usage. Multiply that number by your power company’s rate per kilowatt and you have an estimate of annual energy costs.
