Having a pool in the backyard offers a number of benefits, such as quality time with family and an escape from the summer heat. However, maintenance is a key part of owning one of these features. Not only does it keep the water looking clear, but it also produces a healthy environment. If you’re unsure where to start, here are a few steps to take to ensure that it receives the proper level of care.

3 Tips for Maintaining Your Pool

1. Check Circulation

One of the first steps is to ensure that the water is experiencing an adequate flow. If it’s not, then there’s a risk of algae growth within the areas that are becoming stagnant. This could also encourage the accumulation of outdoor debris, which could clog the filters and exacerbate the issue. Checking the movement at both the pump and the jets should reveal a need for service.

2. Test the Chemistry

pool

Pools have to remain within a certain pH level in order to avoid accidental health issues. Otherwise, the constant use and exposure to the outdoors will jeopardize the cleanliness of the water.

Performing a test and shocking the system with a concentrated mixture are the most effective approaches. Leave the pump running for at least six hours before testing a second time to ensure that it can work all the way through.

3. Clean the Filter

The mesh-like material in the filter is only made to hold a certain amount and requires routine cleaning in order to preserve its functionality. Filters that remain in place for too long will restrict the flow and allow the water to become stagnant.

If the pump gauge reads approximately 10 pounds more than normal, it might be time for a backwash. Cartridge filters will require a complete removal of the cartridge before you can complete the cleaning process.
