A swimming pool is ideal for keeping cool in summer, as well as a terrific way to entertain family and friends. However, for the best results, a pool requires regular maintenance, including cleaning, chemical replacement, and occasional resurfacing. Here's what you need to know about resurfacing a pool.
What Is Pool Resurfacing?
Inground pools often consist of a concrete shell covered by a plaster, pebble, or fiberglass surface. Over years of pool use, the outer layer experiences wear and tear. It can crack, tear, become discolored, or show erosion marks. If you experience any of these issues, pool resurfacing can restore its appearance and prevent water loss. Even if treated gently and maintained properly, a swimming pool should undergo resurfacing every 10 to 15 years. It is also a good option any time you wish to change the look or style of the pool.
What Should You Expect?
To resurface your pool, you must first drain it. A week before draining, stop adding chemicals to make the water safer for the environment, so you don't kill plants or pollute the groundwater. Then, drain the pool completely. This process can take 12 to 14 hours, so consider doing it overnight.
Your pool contractor will then remove the old outer layer, dispose of the waste, and prepare the shell for a new surface. They seal the plumbing and install the new surfacing material you've chosen. Once the material is in place, they refill and monitor the pool to make sure it is sound. However, for the chemical bonds to set, the surface and sealant must cure for seven days before use, so don't let anyone swim in it for the first week.
