Why You Should Look for the Certified Humane® Food Label
Many people are now careful to choose food produced ethically. Buying from a trusted local store or farm gives you more information about the source of your food, but it’s not always easy to find ethical and healthy products. Here is an overview of some of the labels you’ll see and why the Certified Humane® label is an indication of quality.
Food Labels Can be Misleading
Commonly used labels, such as "all-natural,” "organic," and "non-GMO," all sound positive, but they may not mean what you think.
The FDA says the term “natural” should mean there’s nothing artificial or synthetic in the food however, the term only refers to ingredients and not production techniques.
There is a difference between organic foods and “made with organic” products. The latter only have to contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients.
Non-GMO foods must be completely free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). But without proper precautions, it is possible for non-GMO farms to become contaminated with GMO substances.
Certified Humane® Is a Label You Can Trust
With so much uncertainty around labeling, it’s useful to be aware of products you can rely on. If a product has the Certified Humane label, it means the farm that produced it has been thoroughly inspected by Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC). This international nonprofit certification organization has strict standards to ensure farm animals are treated humanely throughout their life.
These standards include ensuring animals are never kept in cages or crates and have the space and surroundings to behave naturally. Their feed should be high-quality and never contain animal byproducts, growth hormones, or antibiotics.
Scientists and veterinarians with expertise on specific species conduct regular inspections. Unlike some other certifications, there is no phase-in period, meaning all standards must be met before certification is given.
If you want to support the humane treatment of farm animals and enjoy ethically sourced produce, look to Surfing Goat Dairy in Kula, HI.
