Scuba diving is a thrilling experience for people of all ages. With more dive guides and excursion locations becoming family-oriented, it’s easier than ever to plan a group scuba trip. To make sure everyone has a good time, follow these tips when organizing a family vacation.

How to Plan a Memorable Family Scuba Adventure

1. Think About Your Children’s Needs

Because of their smaller mass, children are more sensitive to cold water. Choose a warmer destination to prevent your little ones from feeling uncomfortable. Booking the trip through operations that cater to families will ensure your children’s needs are considered.

These establishments are more likely to have child-sized tanks and gear on hand. Smaller tanks are less awkward for younger family members to carry and still provide plenty of air.

2. Incorporate Other Activities

scuba divingBack-to-back days of scuba diving can exhaust kids. Keep the fun levels high by alternating dives with other activities.

Research nearby sites of interest, such as amusement parks or relaxing beaches. Plan a nature walk and scavenger hunt to encourage kids to run around and explore. If any family members are too young to dive, pack some games and favorite toys to entertain them during scuba excursions.

3. Be Aware of Depth Restrictions

Certifying agencies such as the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and Scuba Schools International (SSI) will register children as young as 10 years old. However, their certification doesn’t mean that they can visit the same locations as adults.

Divers under 15 years old have depth restrictions. For those between 10 and 11, the limit is 40 feet, while children ages 12 to 14 are restricted to dives of 60 feet or less.

Calm, shallow areas are more suited to family trips. They also allow group members who are too young for scuba certification to enjoy other water activities. Ask potential dive centers which days they offer shore excursions. Inform them ahead of time of any young divers and their restrictions.
