Sorting and culling take up a decent part of any moving project, as such activities prevent relocating items you no longer want or need. Once you’ve decided which belongings you’re giving away to family and friends, donating, and selling, it’s packing time. Use this guide to review what to pack first, so you still have access to everything you need mid-move, including toiletries and towels.

4 Items to Pack First if You Are Moving

1. Holiday Decorations

Pack holiday items you do not have an immediate need for, such as 4th of July decorations for an August or September move. If you are putting these and any other “pack first” items in storage, work with clear, sealable plastic bins. They are sturdier than cardboard boxes and are impervious to water and vermin damage. Using bins also saves boxes for moving purposes.

2. Seasonal Clothing

Dedicate several boxes or bags to out-of-season clothing you will not use for at least two months. Bulky sweaters, snow pants, bathing suits, and tank tops are among the seasonal clothing you’ll pack first, depending on the time of year you are relocating. You can also throw in any bedding you do not immediately need or use said bedding as packing materials for delicate items.

3. Wall Decor

Start taking down artwork, wall hangings, framed photographs, and any other decor one room at a time. Label each box by room, such as living room decor” and “bathroom artwork” to avoid confusion post-move.

Wrap fragile pieces in bubble wrap and place foam or cardboard inserts in between each item. Stand framed items up in boxes instead of putting them on top of each other, which can cause glass breakage and frame scratches.

4. Knick-Knacks & Collections

Tackle any collections you do not immediately need to make packing progress. Baseball card collections, boxes of seashells, doll collections, scrapbooks, and  knick-knacks are among the items you can pack in the early days of your move. Dust everything before packing so you don’t take dirt and grime into your new residence.
