Termite control is something every homeowner needs to keep in mind. These small insects have the power to cause severe, expensive damage to homes around the country and world, as they weaken wood by consuming its cellulose content. To help you protect your home from these detrimental pests, review the following advice.

How to Keep Termites Away From Your Home

1. Don’t Use Wood Mulch Around Your Home

Placing wood mulch directly against your home’s foundation invites termite activity. This is especially true when it rains. Termites love soft, damp, rotting wood because it is easier to chew and digest. Keep all other wood away from your home for the same reasons, such as stacks of firewood. If you want to use mulch around the house’s foundation, stick to pebbles or other non-wood varieties, such as rubber mulch.

2. Ensure the Soil Slopes Away From Your Residence

When the grade around your home slopes into the structure, the foundation gets exposed to rainwater and creates termite control issues. Since termites are attracted to moisture for survival reasons, the soil should slope away from your home. Properly graded soil also keeps water from infiltrating foundation cracks and causing them to expand via freeze/thaw cycles and helps avoid related basement damage.

3. Keep the Gutters Clean

Rain gutters clogged with leaves, twigs, nuts, seeds, and other organic debris can cause rainwater to spill over their sides and pool around the foundation. Cleaning the gutters on a regular basis avoids termite damage and other water damage. Depending on how many trees surround your property, consider investing in perforated metal gutter guards. They prevent large pieces of debris from entering the system and causing premature clogs.

4. Seal Foundation Gaps

Foundation cracks and gaps make it easy for termites and other pests to enter your home. Seal every visible gap or crack to enjoy a pest-free residence. Cracks and gaps are common foundation issues as a house settles. If you notice any large cracks, such as those more than a half-inch wide, contact a foundation contractor to assess the issue and make the necessary repairs.
