Motorcycle operators in Alabama must obtain liability motorcycle insurance to legally ride their bikes on public roads. You need at least $25,000 of personal injury liability per injured person, to a per-accident maximum of $50,000. You also need $25,000 of property damage liability coverage. Below is an introduction to this type of insurance and what it covers.

What Does It Cover?

The basic motorcycle insurance coverage listed above pays for any medical care and repair costs that might arise if you should injure someone or damage their property in an accident that's deemed your fault. It also pays for lawyer fees, court costs, and other legal expenses you'd incur if the other motorist involved should sue you. Note that the legally-required insurance only covers other people's losses. If you want to protect yourself and your motorcycle, other types of optional coverage are available.

What Are Some Important Add-ons?

The two most common types of optional coverage are collision and comprehensive insurance. The first pays to repair or replace your bike if it should be damaged in an accident. Comprehensive coverage, on the other hand, pays for non-collision losses, such as those caused by fire, flood, vandalism, or theft.

Other add-ons include the following:

  • Medical Payments Coverage: This pays for medical treatment, ambulance transport, X-rays, and other necessary medical expenses to treat you and your passengers after a motorcycle accident.
  • Customized Parts Coverage: This pays for custom parts and bike additions beyond factory equipment, such as chrome parts, custom paint, sidecars, custom seats, crash bars, and fairings.
  • Motorcycle and Transport Trailer Coverage: This covers losses to your bike and trailer while you're towing it behind a car.
  • Rental Reimbursement Insurance: This coverage reimburses you for the cost of a rental vehicle if your bike is stolen or out of commission during repairs.
