Every lawn is different, and it takes a dedicated care plan to keep it looking pristine. Mowing is an essential part. Using your outdoor equipment correctly will save time and yield the best results. Here are essential tips to follow for a lush, healthy lawn.

Do:

Grasscycle.

Lawn clippings are an excellent fertilizer, so leave them on the lawn after you mow. They’ll feed nutrients into the soil as they decompose, and you won’t have to worry about cleaning them up. You’ll also save money on store-bought fertilizer. You can establish an effective decomposition rate by mowing every five to seven days.

Sharpen your mower blades.

Sharp mower blades give you a clean, even cut across grass blades. Aside from looking better, your lawn will grow taller. Rough, uneven cuts are an entry point for pests and grass diseases, and you may notice the grass dies or browns.

Sharpen the blades on your outdoor equipment several times during the mowing season. Flip your mower over and unscrew the blade. Run a metal file across the cutting edge until the blade is as sharp as a butter knife. This is sharp enough to cut grass cleanly, and it won’t dull easily like a razor-sharp edge. If you aren’t comfortable doing the job, ask professionals at a farm equipment store for help.

Don’t:

Cut wet grass.

Wet grass may only fold over when you try to cut it. You may compact areas of your lawn, and the dense mat may prevent sunlight from reaching the roots. Brown spots will soon develop. Wet grass and soil may also build up inside the mower and affect performance, so wait for your lawn to completely dry.

Mow too low.

Mowing lower isn’t always better. Outdoor equipment professionals recommend letting your grass grow tall and then cutting only 1/3 of the blade. This helps shade the roots and will slow water evaporation from the soil. Tall grass will also grow deeper roots, creating a stronger lawn.
