Tractors efficiently perform a host of agricultural tasks, including plowing, planting, and harvesting. These machines are also considerable investments, so proper care is essential for maximizing their usage. Here are a few maintenance tasks you should perform on your machine every day.

How to Extend the Life of Your Tractor

1. Perform a Visual Assessment

Give the vehicle a visual once-over after you’ve used it. Look for visible signs of damage, such as loose belts or cables or breaks and tears in the tire sidewalls.

Also, inspect the body for caked-on dirt or debris. A quick rinse after working in the mud can extend the paint coat.

2. Check Fluid Levels

Like any vehicle, tractors require fluids and fuel to run smoothly. You should check the radiator fluid, fuel, and oil levels daily to make sure they’re topped off. Additionally, grease any joints as needed to reduce wear and tear on the mechanical components.

3. Test the Battery

A failing battery can reduce the power to the tractor, slowing operations. Connections can also loosen and prevent the machine from getting adequate power. Check the connections daily and secure any as needed. You can also use a voltage meter to make sure the battery has ample charge, and replace it if needed.

4. Check Tire Pressure

When tire pressure is too low, the machine will have to work harder to propel itself forward. This will result in increased fuel usage, as well as faster tread wear on the tires. Consult the owners manual for the recommended pressure, but keep in mind that certain activities may call for slight variations. For instance, traveling on paved roads may call for increased pressure.

5. Look at the Air Filter

While you probably won’t need to check the air filter every time you run the machine, inspect it after you’ve been doing a task that could kick up debris, such as harvesting. If you see weeds or crops in the grill screen or radiator, plant debris likely made its way into the filer as well. Since the screen keeps debris out of the internal components, it’s important to replace it when it’s dusty or dirty.
