Like all architectural aspects of your home, your concrete driveway needs to be maintained. Despite the material’s strength and durability, daily use can wear it down. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to protect it and ensure its longevity, including the following.

How to Maintain Concrete Driveways

1. Clean Up Stains

If you’re fixing up your car and spill some oil or grease, make sure to clean it as soon as possible. These are some of the more common types of driveway stains, and if they’re ignored, they can remain on the surface for months, if not years. Most oil-based stains can be tackled with dish detergent or oven cleaning sprays, both of which are designed to remove greasy buildup. For other stains, such as paint splatters or mud, start with a stiff brush and a household cleaning solution. If it persists, try a pressure washer.

2. Reseal It Regularly

Although the frequency with which you should do this task depends on your vehicle and the weather, you should generally reseal it roughly every two years, or whenever the finish starts to wear off. Make sure to give it a thorough cleaning beforehand to avoid locking in grime.

3. Avoid Road Salt & Other Deicers

Come winter, try to reduce or eliminate your use of road salt or other deicers on your driveway. As convenient as they may be, they can negatively interact with the chemicals in concrete. Also, because deicers melt snow and ice, they can exacerbate freezing and thawing damage, which occurs when water enters a crack, freezes, expands, and intensifies the split. Additionally, deicers can corrode any vegetation or metal structures you have nearby.
