Whether you're traveling for work or play, breaking away from the usual routine and heading to a new destination is fun and exciting. Amidst all that liveliness, it's important to engage in proper hotel etiquette to respect the space and those who help keep it running. Here's a list of do's and don'ts for the next time you're on the road.

Do:

Clean up after yourself.

While you'll have the option to opt for a room cleaning whenever you need it, it's important to be conscientious of the hotel staff who are doing this job. It's helpful to leave all of your dirty or wet towels in one place. Don't leave trash strewn about the room; place it in the garbage can instead. Your sheets will be replaced as often as you'd like, but make sure the pillows don't somehow end up in the bathroom.

Respect your neighbors.

While part of traveling is having fun, make sure that you keep your volume at a respectful level. You might be staying at a hotel for a vacation, girl's trip, or birthday bash, but take the celebration to designated social areas or out on the town in order to ensure that everyone else can enjoy their stay, too.

Don't:

Take the hotel home.

It's common - and encouraged - to take the rest of your hotel soaps, shampoos, or lotions home with you. Any of the travel-sized toiletries that you've used throughout your stay won't be given to new guests, so feel free to take those home.

However, the towels, bath robes, dryers, hangers, and other items should be left behind for other guests to enjoy in the future. You wouldn't take the pillows home with you after sleeping at your friend's house. Don't do it at a hotel.

Forget to tip.

If you're opting for room service, cleaning, or any of the other perks a hotel might have to offer, it's important to leave a tip for the staff that helped you out. In the same way that you would pay for dinner at a restaurant and then leave a tip for your waiter, it's encouraged to do the same for folks that complete a service for you at a hotel, such as the person who brings up your bags or the staff that cleans the room.
