Having a security system is essential for keeping your home safe. To get the most from your security cameras, it's best to follow some crucial steps. Below are some do’s and don’ts for using security cameras.

Do:

Place them strategically.

You want to see as much of your property as possible, but you also don’t want to miss clear views of target areas, like entry points. To get wide views, place cameras where the wall meets the roof, angled down and out. To make sure you’re covering all key areas, check that you have a clear line of sight to windows, doors, gates, and the driveway.

Hang them out of reach.

When placing the cameras, choose a spot where they’re less likely to be tampered with. Place them high up, and make sure they’re mostly out of sight, such as under your eaves, to minimize the risk of the camera becoming stolen, destroyed, or tampered with. Hanging them in an out-of-sight, unreachable area also usually keeps them sheltered to help protect them from the elements.

Don’t:

Let the footage go unchecked for long periods.

Review the footage on a regular basis to watch for unusual activity around your property. While how often you should review your footage depends on how long it’s saved, it’s best to check the images every week. This allows you to monitor suspicious activities around the neighborhood, especially if there are reported break-ins or other criminal activity.

Ignore lighting issues.

If an area of your property is brightly- or dimly-lit to your eyes, it will probably be too dim or too bright for the camera. Shadowy areas will prevent clear pictures and details that could help identify persons of interest.

Bright sources of light right, including the sun or a streetlamp, can cause distortions like glare and sunspots. Pay attention to how the sun hits your home and install lighting to minimize dark shadows. Additionally, make sure the cameras aren’t aimed at light sources.
