Thermoform plastic allows manufacturers to create custom-fitted wrapping for several products. Two of the most common styles are blister and clamshell packaging. While the production process is similar to both options, they create vastly different finishes. Here is a closer look at each style's distinct qualities.

What is the Difference Between Blister & Clamshell Packaging?

Blister

Blister packaging involves a plastic wrapping—the "blister”—around the front of the product, which is attached to a paper, cardboard, or aluminum backing card. An advantage of this packaging style is its affordability, and it also offers a tight seal. As a result, it's commonly utilized for pharmaceuticals and in retail spaces to seal items such as makeup and general hardware.

Even though it's composed of multiple materials, blister packaging is typically easily recyclable. Most facilities require that the package is disassembled to separate the plastic from the backing card. However, the challenge arises with certain products, like medication cards. These items aren't always easy to separate the pieces, but fortunately, some facilities accept blister packs as a whole.

Clamshell

It's also created as a whole piece with hinges for easy opening and closing. This arrangement creates a more secure finish, making it a popular choice for retail items prone to theft, like electronics and power tools. Additionally, clamshells are the go-to choice for take-out packaging for restaurants and eateries.
