A driver is 20% more likely to get into an auto accident during the winter months. Snow, freezing rain, ice, high winds, and frigid temperatures can all impede your ability to drive safely. For this reason, extra care and caution are essential when driving in wintry conditions. Here are a few tips to help you minimize the risk of an auto accident and stay safe this winter.

A Brief Guide to Safe Winter Driving

1. Slow Your Speed

Slowing your traveling speed gives you more time to respond to and avoid winter driving hazards. When snow or freezing rain is falling, or you're unsure about the slickness of the road, go slower than you normally would. This is especially important if you should hit a patch of black ice, which is nearly impossible to detect until you're losing traction; slowing down will help you keep better control of the vehicle. Also, be sure to increase the following distance between your vehicle and the one in front; while 3 to 4 seconds is the norm, 6 to 8 seconds should be employed on winter roads.

2. Turn Off Cruise Control

Cruise control may be convenient, but using it in winter driving conditions can be dangerous. When it is engaged, cruise control can easily make your vehicle travel too fast over slick spots, increasing the chances of losing control and getting into an auto accident. By switching it off, you are better able to sense the road underneath the vehicle and make any adjustments as needed to maintain control and ensure secure traction.

3. Plan Ahead

First, check the weather report before heading out anywhere. When possible, allow extra travel time, map out alternative routes, or avoid travel altogether in order to avoid an accident. Also, pack an emergency kit, which will protect you in the event the vehicle goes off the road and leaves you stranded. The kit should include a phone charger; flashlight; extra winter clothing; a plastic tarp; bottled water; and shelf-stable, nutrient-dense foods like energy bars and dried fruit. Store the kit in an accessible location, like on the floor of the backseat.
