If you’re moving to Alaska, you likely can’t wait to explore. Once your car carrier delivers your vehicle, you can take scenic drives to get the lay of the land, the best views, and maximum comfort. To help you plot a few journeys, here are some of the most stunning drives in Alaska.

What Are Some of the Best Scenic Drives in Alaska?

1. Alaska Canada Highway

Open year-round, the Alaska Canada Highway, or the Alcan Highway, is over 1,300 miles long, connecting Alaska’s Delta Junction to Dawson Creek in British Columbia. You’ll see a variety of terrain, like forests, mountains, wildflower fields, and snow plains. With limited stops, you can drive it in a few days, or you can plan a week-long trip, loaded with stops like the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge and Mukluk Land.

For a shorter drive, find an access point near you—like Fairbanks, Tok, or Delta Junction—and drive it for a few hours. Bear in mind that most of the highway is in Canada, and if you plan to cross the border, you’ll need the appropriate documents, like a passport. It also has a few remote stretches, so get gas frequently.

2. Steese Highway

For a central trek, drive Steese Highway, which spans 150 miles from Fairbanks to Circle. It’s an interior designated scenic byway, taking you within 50 miles of the Arctic Circle. The road is a mix of paved and gravel but is in sound condition and open all year.

During summer, you’ll be treated to light play from the clouds and sun, while you may glimpse the Northern Lights in winter. The highway goes from river bottom forests to high elevations, with possible stops at Cleary Summit or Eagle Summit. You can also visit gold rush camps, like the Chatanika Gold Camp, as well as hotspots like Circle Hot Springs.

3. Walden Point Road

Walden Point Road is another designated scenic byway. Spanning only 15 miles from Metlakatla to Annette Bay, it offers stunning ocean and forest views with plenty of wildlife. You’ll be able to see Gravina Island and the Percy Islands. The road is southeast of Anchorage, nestled on the coast to the west of British Columbia, and within the Annette Island Reserve, the only official Indian Reserve in Alaska. There are multiple pull-off spots to enjoy the views, which may include wildlife like humpback whales and dolphins. Plus, since it’s in the far south of the state, you’ll have the opportunity for a meandering drive down to it, allowing you to see even more scenery.
