Many homeowners prefer vinyl siding due to its attractive appearance and low cost. Vinyl is also durable and can last for decades with routine maintenance. Whether you already have this material on your home or plan to have it installed, understanding its needs will help you keep it in good condition for years to come.

3 Tips for Taking Care of Vinyl Siding

1. Inspect for Damage

Vinyl siding is impervious to water and doesn't rot or rust. However, its waterproofing capabilities may conceal moisture from rainwater that seeps into joints and holes that allow the material to breathe. As a result, the home's insulation and wooden framing can rot and weaken, undermining its structural integrity long before you notice the problem.

Pay attention to streaks or stains on the surface, as these indicate water intrusion. Also, check for loose, warped, and cracked panels. If such issues are widespread, consider having the materials replaced altogether to prevent recurring problems.

2. Wash It

Since it's constantly exposed to outdoor elements, vinyl siding turns grimy and discolored from dirt, dust, and debris over time. While it's mold- and mildew-resistant, the surface can still develop fungi when residue clings to the material. Washing your exterior once a year is enough to take care of the problem on most properties.

If rinsing the vinyl with a garden hose doesn’t get the job done, wash it with a cloth or soft-bristled brush and a mild cleaning solution. Besides laundry detergent or dishwashing soap, you can also mix bleach or vinegar in warm water. Begin at the bottom and work your way up to keep track of the cleaned areas.

If you decide to clean the siding with a power washer, check the device's manual to know what pressure setting is safe to use on vinyl. Otherwise, the water stream could break apart the panels.

3. Steer Clear of Extreme Heat

Vinyl can't withstand extreme heat, such as open flames or concentrated sunlight from concave windows. It can melt when exposed to high temperatures beyond its capacity, which is about 160 to 165 degrees. Avoid grilling or cooking near the house, and move away combustible materials like dry leaves, twigs, paper, and cloth to prevent fires.
