Perfluoroalkoxy alkanes (PFAs) are a family of potentially hazardous chemicals that can accumulate in drinking water supplies and soil. In the spring of 2020, high levels of PFAs were discovered in well water on French Island, a result of contaminant runoff from firefighting equipment used at nearby La Crosse Regional Airport. This has raised concerns among those living in the area and throughout La Crosse County. Below, learn more about this subject and how an attorney can help if your water well has been negatively impacted.

PFAs in La Crosse County

The likely cause of PFAs in well water is the use of chemical foam utilized for firefighting training at the airport. This foam has been a part of training exercises since the 1970s. Its runoff has spread through groundwater into the wells of private homes in the area. PFA levels should not exceed 20 parts per trillion in well water, but testing has shown that about half of all homes sampled in the area exceed this threshold.

This has understandably caused worry among homeowners, as PFAs can cause thyroid issues, weakened immune systems, and cancer, among other health problems. Homeowners are also concerned about diminished property values and other consequences of high PFA levels.

Legal Claims

The presence of PFAs has led many area residents to rely on bottled water for drinking, cooking, and grooming. However, as of January 2021, the city had only provided bottled water to a small fraction of the affected homes. Many homeowners want the city to cover the cost of the bottled water, the cleaning of the well water supply, and other damages.

How an Attorney Can Help

If PFAs have compromised your well water, an attorney can help protect your rights. They will communicate with city officials and other authorities so that these parties understand the gravity of the problem and the threats you face. They can launch their own investigations and testing to highlight the severity of the situation and inspire action and solutions from local leaders. They will propose and negotiate settlements for your compensation and, if necessary, represent you in court.
