If you’ve booked a once-in-a-lifetime travel photography trip, it’s time to start thinking about what you should pack. The last thing you want to do is forget an essential tool when you’re thousands of miles away from home. Use the following guide to help you get a jump-start on packing and ensure you’re fully prepared for your journey.

A Travel Photographer's Guide to Packing

1. Photography Equipment

Photography is the primary purpose of your trip, so don’t forget any of your equipment. While your camera and lenses are essential, consider bringing an all-purpose zoom lens in the interest of packing lighter.

Take a lightweight tripod and cable release for high-quality, long-exposure photos. You’ll also want to pack memory cards and readers for extra storage and backup, camera cleaning supplies, batteries and chargers, filters, and your camera bag.

2. Appropriate Apparel

Make sure to bring at least two sets of clothes and a pair of sneakers in which you will be comfortable walking.  If you know there will be some amount of climbing or hiking, a durable pair of hiking boots might be beneficial, as well. Take a waterproof jacket and sunscreen to protect against the elements, as well as bug spray to fend off pests while you shoot.

3. Personal Items

Travel photography is an exciting opportunity, so it’s easy to forget your personal items as you’re preparing for the trip. Remember to take your smartphone, charger, and a universal plug adapter. Bring all of the medications you use regularly, and consider including antacids and headache medication just in case. Opt for travel-size toiletries to save space.

Passport processing can take anywhere from six to eight weeks. If you need to renew yours, do so a couple of months ahead of time. Keep in mind that some countries do not accept passports that are set to expire within six months.

It is also recommended that you make a copy of the front and back of the credit cards that you plan to bring with you on the trip as well as your passport face page. In the event that those items are lost, having a copy will ensure that you do not permanently lose that information.

4. Safety Equipment

As long as you stay with your photography tour, you’re unlikely to get in any trouble. However, it’s a good idea to be prepared. Bring a travel-friendly first aid kit and a mini flashlight. Don’t forget to pack your health insurance documentation, as well as travel insurance information. Always pack plenty of snacks and clean water to keep you energized during your shoots.
