Brake pads are one of the most important parts of your car. When they are applied to the brake rotor, they create the friction necessary to bring the vehicle to a slow or stop. Because they are utilized every time you press the brake pedal, pads tend to wear out relatively fast and should be replaced by an auto mechanic every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. But there are some steps you can take that can help extend the lifespan of your pads; three of these steps are discussed below.

How to Extend the Life of Your Brake Pads

1. Don't Speed

Hitting the brake pedal to slow or stop from a high rate of speed is extremely tough on the pads. These hard stops generate more heat in your brakes, which causes the pads to deteriorate faster.

The best solution is to drive slower. Stick to the speed limit on open roads, and, in heavy traffic, try to drive at a slow, consistent speed, rather than accelerating quickly to catch up to the car in front and then slamming on the brakes when you do.

2. Use One Foot for Both the Gas and Brake Pedals

Some drivers are in the habit of using one foot to control the gas and the other to control the brakes. But this makes it all too easy to inadvertently hit both pedals at the same time, which can destroy your brake pads in short order.

While this type of driving is technically legal, it is not only hard on your vehicle, but it also increases the risk of an accident. Protect your brake pads—and entire vehicle—and avoid a trip to the auto mechanic by switching to one-foot driving.

3. Lighten Your Car's Load

If you routinely drive with heavy items in your car, the brake pads are most likely taking a hit whenever the brake pedal is pressed. Because the pads have a heavier load to bring to a stop, more force and stress are exerted on the pads as they create the needed friction. Keep your vehicle load to a minimum, and the pads will almost certainly last longer.
